With Blasting for the Highway Twinning Project and road construction in the Winnipeg area, we recommend giving yourself plenty of extra time when traveling between Kenora and Winnipeg.
Blasting on Highways 1 and 17 can cause upwards of an hour delay as they are alternating traffic going East and West during blasting hours and reduced speeds in construction zones. This is part of Ontario’s ‘Plan to Build’ project plan on 2022
Approaching Winnipeg, the South Perimeter Highway will be closed overnight for the month of June. According to the Manitoba Government, the South Perimeter Highway (at St. Mary’s Rd interchange) will be closed from June 12th – June 30th for the hours of 9:00pm – 5:30am daily. There will be a detour set up but it is recommended to take the North Perimeter to avoid city congestion. This temporary closure is part of the plan to upgrade Winnipeg’s Perimeter Highway into a Freeway Standard.
Please be patient and drive safe, factor in road conditions, and arrive early to the city if you have a flight whenever possible. Allow yourself at least 2 hours at the airport for domestic flights, and a minimum of 3 hours for international travel.
